Have you noticed that the moisturiser you’ve used for years suddenly doesn’t feel quite enough? It may not be that your skincare has stopped working. Your skin’s needs may simply have changed.
As we age, it’s common for skin to become drier, tighter or more easily irritated. Fine lines may be the most noticeable sign of ageing, but drier skin and changes to the skin barrier matter too.
So, what’s happening — and what does your skin need more of?
Why skin can become drier as we age
Natural oil production can decrease
Sebum is the natural oil that helps protect the skin and reduce moisture loss.
As we age, sebum production can decrease, leaving skin feeling drier, rougher or less comfortable. This is one reason a lightweight moisturiser that once worked beautifully may no longer feel rich enough.
The skin barrier can become less efficient
The outer layer of the skin acts as a protective barrier, helping to keep moisture in and irritants out.
It contains lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. As we age, changes in these lipids can make it harder for the skin to retain moisture.
More water can then escape through the skin in a process known as transepidermal water loss, or TEWL.
The result is often skin that feels tighter, drier or more sensitive.
Dry skin and dehydrated skin aren’t quite the same thing
They can feel similar, but there is a difference.
Dry skin generally lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water - and your skin can be both.
Dry skin may feel rough or flaky, while dehydrated skin can appear dull and show fine dehydration lines more easily.
That’s why mature skin often benefits from a combination of hydration, nourishing oils and ingredients that help reduce moisture loss.
What ageing skin may need more of
The answer doesn’t have to be a complicated routine. Often, it’s simply about choosing products that support hydration and the skin barrier.
Gentle cleansing
Avoid cleansers that leave your skin feeling tight or squeaky clean. Our Gentle Cleansing Oil removes sunscreen, makeup and everyday grime while leaving the skin comfortable.
Hydrating ingredients
Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid help attract and hold water in the upper layers of the skin, supporting a softer, more hydrated feel. Our Hydrate Toning Mist and Glow Serum are both designed with hydration in mind, making them easy additions when your skin is feeling a little drier or more thirsty.
Nourishing oils and lipids
Emollient oils can help replenish softness and support the skin barrier. Ingredients such as jojoba, olive squalane, chia seed and camellia oils provide useful fatty acids and lipids for skin that is becoming drier. Our Replenish Face Oil and Rejuvenate Face Oil are both designed to add that extra layer of nourishment.
A richer moisturiser
A cream can help seal in moisture and reduce water loss. If your skin has become noticeably drier, a richer formula may feel more comfortable than the lightweight lotions you once preferred. Our Restore Face Cream is a rich, concentrated option designed to nourish and help support the skin barrier.
The Botanique Skin Approach
Your skin isn’t failing - it’s changing.
The goal isn’t to make your skin behave exactly as it did at 25. It’s to support its natural functions with the hydration, nourishment and barrier support it needs now.
At Botanique Skin, we believe skincare should work with your skin, not against it.
That means keeping routines simple and choosing ingredients that help skin feel comfortable, supported and cared for.
It’s about giving your skin what it actually needs.
